John Ashcroft: Bald-faced liar, or terminally gullible?

US Attorney General John Ashcroft wants us to believe that he believed Syrian assurances that Maher Arar would not be tortured. Either Mr. Ashcroft is arrogant enough to believe that we’ve all checked our brains into permanent storage during the war on terrorism, or he himself is … monumentally gullible.
Maher Arar was mistreated. Wayne Easter and John Ashcroft ought to give him some of the answers he’s looking for about how and why it occurred, to the extent that they can without compromising security, and then figure out how to prevent more Maher Arar’s from happening. And if they can’t do this, then our respective governments should find them new lines of work. Security is critical to the future of both our nations, no doubt.Â. The balance that must be found lies in the simple observation tha. we can’t credibly be the champions of human rights while denying our own citizenry those basic rights (stuff like trials, lawyers, the right not to be tortured and so on).
