Around the Blogosphere… Friday Wrap-Up

Any time an article or post uses the word “disemboweled,” you know it’s going to be interesting. Our friend Andy Abramson over at VoIP Watch is up first this week, dishing on the latest news on Nokia N95. “It seems some carriers in the UK, have been playing magician and are making the IP communications stack that makes VoIP calling possible over WiFi a tad invisible on the new Nokia N95.” But don’t worry, Andy’s looking out for ya. “I’m not sure, but if there is a standard firmware version out there from Nokia, you can likely just reflash the phone, or if you want the benefits of VoIP, you can go out and buy an unlocked one and then just use your own SIM withut the hassles of a contract paid for phone.”
Tom Keating over on the VoIP & Gadgets Blog has got Apple’s Blame Game covered. In a recent statement, “Apple said, ‘We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS® X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned.’ Wow. So Apple announced a major delay and places the blame squarely on the much-anticipated Apple iPhone as the reason why their next operating system is delayed. I have to wonder, is this just a PR move so Apple doesn’t suffer the same criticisms that Microsoft faced when they delayed Vista. I can just see the Apple fans reading this and saying ‘Ok, I can live with a little delay in Leopard since I can’t wait for the Apple iPhone. A worthy sacrifice to give up some resources to the iPhone team.’ “ So folks, what do YOU think? Is that the strategy or is something else afoot?
I’d be remiss if I didn’t include something about the latest goings on with Vonage, and it was all the rage with blogs this week again, but VoIP-News has got it covered. It’s certainly been quite a week for the beleagured firm. A week filled with a CEO resignation, effective immediately thankyouverymuch, a discussion with Congress, and oh wait … that little temporary stay that meant all the difference in the world. At least for now.
