Truphone has won a court injunction against T-Mobile blocking of its services. Judge has ordered T-Mobile (UK) Ltd to stop blocking calls to truphone and to interconnect with Truphone.
Truphone provides low-cost internet telephony service on mobile phones causing it to grow in popularly shortly after its launch. T-Mobile fearing that this will affect their revenue started blocking calls to Truphone and refuse to interconnect with them all together. This forced truphone to go to court seeking an injuction against T-Mobile actions, an injuction which was fully granted. T-Mobile (UK) actions are not surprising because the cost of mobile communication is very high in Europe giving the mobile operators opportunity to rip off their subscribers but mobile voip is changing all that and they are not happy about that. That is why, while T-mobile (US) is busy launching their own voip service in America, T-mobile (UK) is trying to block mobile voip in Europe
After the rulling James Tagg, Truphone’s chief executive officer said: "The injunction is good news not only for Truphone but for every company trying to develop internet-era services and for every consumer wanting freedom of choice and lower prices. We are determined to bring better-value mobile calls, text messages and other innovative services to mobile phone users, and it’s right that we should not be prevented from doing so.To be granted interim relief means we successfully demonstrated that we have an arguable case to make at a full trial. To be granted interim relief means we successfully demonstrated that we have an arguable case to make at a full trial."
This is a victory for voip technology and other internet-era services. Telecom service providers should accept the fact that this technology is here to stay and there is no blocking it. The earlier they adopt it and harness its revenue potential the better.
