Is the Grass Really Greener at Skype?

Niklas Zennstrom, Skype’s cofounder, said recently that business was falling short a bit, missing the company’s short-term goals. At the recent ETRE technology conference in Hungary, eWeek reported that Zennstrom told everyone, “We had to chart the trajectory of growth and how fast that would run, (but) we found out that was a bit front-loaded. We overshot in terms of monetization … Our position in the market has strengthened … you need to look at the long-term value of companies.”
When Niklas and his co-founder, Janus Friis, stepped down, it was before their short-term goals were fully realized, although the company still is moving along at quite a respectable pace. Considering Skype was founded only a few short years ago, the fact that eBay had already paid out $530 million to shareholders was beyond good, and remember, that’s not its final price. Unfortunately, eBay said last week that they’re slicing upwards of $1.2 billion off the price they’re willing to pay.
