SightSpeed: Speedy Video VoIP for You!

Source: asteriskblog.com

My friend had been looking for a video conferencing application to use for calling her fiancé when she stumbled upon a post about the top free VoIP applications for Mac. She was intrigued with SightSpeed, because it was highly recommended listed on PCWorld’s “100 Best Products of 2007.”

Quite a feat for a nifty video calling app.

And I must say that they had reason to hail it as such. SightSpeed is so easy to use, it uses up minimal resources on your machine, and it lives up to its name: fast video calling when you want it.

The only bug my friend had related was that when she would max out her RAM/Memory when using SightSpeed. Even if she force-quits the application, the icon remains on her dock. So she sometimes has to restart her computer in order to remove the annoying SightSpeed icon left on her dock.

I just don’t know how SightSpeed, on a Windows computer, performs better than Skype because it uses up less memory. Thus, call quality is crisper, and the videos just render faster.

The only other lament my friend has, aside from the dock-sticking bug, is that the text chat windows “float,” on OS X. Since Mac is all for floating windows, SightSpeed has also adopted the same concept for its Mac version. What’s so bad about it? “Try finding the text window when you’re in a flurry of busy-ness without Exposé and you’ll see what I mean.”

But thank heavens for OS X’s Exposé, she can find her text chat window in no time. But what if she forgets about Exposé too and keeps looking for that tiny text chat window everywhere? Haha, just playing with a funny thought.

All in all, video calling is such a boon to humanity. With applications like SightSpeed, there would be no need for children to go home and suffer familial strife with the parents when there are video VoIP apps around. Truly, the telecommunications field has improved to the point that there need not be cases of parents strangling their children or vice versa. Through VoIP, the moment someone raises his or her voice and the tempers flare up, one only needs to press “Quit” or “Force Quit” or “CTRL-ALT-Del” and quit the voice/video chat application, and the fight would be over and done with. See, because of technology, peace on earth would be a very reachable concept.

Just playing with you. ;)

But my friend is seriously recommending SightSpeed. Maybe I should give it a go too. )
