Just some few days back, Vonage and AT&T decided to settle the dispute between then over alleged patent infringement by the former’s voice-over-IP (VoIP) service. The information came in from the announcement made by the two companies concerning the issue.
Though the two companies refused to provide the precise details of the agreement, the deal came in some weeks after the two had agreed in principle to end the litigation which accused Vonage of infringing on patents for connecting phone service to Internet systems.
It looks like in the settlement, there will be payment of a lump sum and royalties based on previous lawsuits settled by Vonage. Previously the Internet telephony company had to tackle multiple lawsuits that are relating to similar VoIP patents. They have even struck deals with Sprint and Verizon to continue running its existing service without any significant modification. The complaint brought forward by Verizon might have blocked Vonage from connecting to its phone network. It might have contributed to Verizon significantly curbing Vonage’s ability to serve its American customer base.
