Verizon Sues Again

Verizon is suing another provider over alleged patent infringement.
Charter Communications is the latest to be sued by the communications giant. You might remember that Verizon sued (and won) Vonage for patent infringement. The same is the case with this lawsuit. But, Charter is allegedly taking it a step further by building on the patent protected technology. Here’s a snippet from Cable Digital News (click here to read the full article):
It’s no secret that Verizon has steadily been losing wireline voice subscribers on a number of competitive fronts. It lost 8 percent of its primary access lines in 2007, much of that due to cable VOIP competition. This raises the question of whether Verizon plans to take more cable MSOs to court in order to thwart further line losses.
On the surface, it would appear that it is capable of doing this. All cable MSOs use the same basic PacketCable architecture for completing VOIP calls. If one is guilty of infringing Verizon’s patents, it’s conceivable that the others are as well.
The lawsuit is very similar to one filed against Cox Communication last month. According to Multichannel News:
Both suits claim that the cable companies infringe on eight patents, owned by Verizon or predecessor companies, related to delivering phone service over data networks.
