Air Canada to launch Elite brand

Source: saunderslog.com

Air Canada plans elite 40-seat jets. – Air Canada is set to launch yet another flying brand, called Elite, that will turn normal jets into luxury cruisers for expense-account-equipped business travellers.Elite will be a separate airline — one of five smaller brands spun off from the main airline — whose Airbus A-319 jets will contain about 40 seats, substantially less than the 120 or seats found in a regular A-319, Robert Milton, Air Canada’s chief executive officer, said yesterday.

Air Canada’s problem is not brand.   They have a huge debt, and no meaningful competition, which equates to high prices and no incentive for individuals to travel.  Example:  Over the past week I have been in Las Vegas.  The US Air fare was around $700.  Air Canada’s was in excess of $2,000.  Guess who I flew?

Rule #2: Build an Effective Organization

Installment #2 in my Top 10 Rules fo. Success in the Software Industry.

Rule #2: Build an effective organization.Rule #1, this one sounds deceptively simple.  Too many businesses, though, have broken organizations, and suffer because of it.  Sometimes those organizations were designed incorrectly to begin with.  More often than not, though, theyve just worn out.Â.  By that I mean that the conditions that caused the organization to be created in the first place have changed, and the company hasnt evolved its organizational model to match.  In my experience, most organizations are worn out within 18 to 24 months of their original design.  Thats because, if youre planning properly (see Rule #1), youre planning on a three year horizon, but you can really only see clearly for 12 to 18 months down the road.

Warren on the German Elections

Source: saunderslog.com

David Warren in tomorrow’s Citizen (ain’t the net great?) commenting on the fallout of the German elections.  He has nothing good to say about the Gerhard Schroeder’s conduct, but points out that it’s a convenient excuse for the US to shut down their military presence in the Germany.Â.
